What is the drink-drive limit in Tenerife?
The legal limit is 0.5 g/L of alcohol in the blood (0.25 mg/L in breath) for general drivers, dropping to 0.3 g/L blood (0.15 mg/L breath) for novice and professional drivers. A proposed reduction to 0.2 g/L has been discussed but is not yet law, so the 0.5 g/L figure still applies.
What is the speed limit on Tenerife streets and motorways?
The TF-1 motorway is 120 km/h and conventional roads are 90 km/h, or 80 if narrow. In town the limit is 50 km/h only on roads with two or more lanes each way, 30 km/h on single-lane streets (the default on most Los Cristianos back-streets) and 20 km/h on single-platform pedestrian-priority streets.
Are there toll roads in Tenerife?
No. Tenerife has no toll roads at all, so the TF-1, TF-5 and every other route are free to use. You only ever pay for parking and fuel. You can compare cars on our homepage to plan your trips.
Can I drive a hire car up to Mount Teide, and is the road ever closed?
Yes, you can drive a hire car up the TF-21 from Vilaflor to the cable-car base, about 47 km from Los Cristianos. However, the Cabildo regularly closes the high Teide roads for ice and snow between roughly December and March, sometimes requiring chains, so always check the Cabildo road-information service before setting off.
Can I drive to Masca?
You can drive to the Masca village viewpoint via the winding TF-436, which has a small free car park. The gorge trailhead, though, bans private cars: you must park at the Santiago del Teide cemetery car park and take the compulsory TITSA route 355 minibus, and the hike is descent-only with a compulsory boat exit to Los Gigantes.
Do hire cars include the V-16 beacon?
Yes. The connected V-16 beacon became mandatory from 1 January 2026, and hire firms supply one in the glovebox of each car. Check it is there when you collect the vehicle, since driving without it risks a €200 fine. Our general FAQ answers more practical questions. Ready to explore the island on your own schedule? Compare car hire deals for Los Cristianos and pick up a vehicle that suits your trip, from the coast road to the climb up Teide.
What is the cheapest car hire in Los Cristianos?
Compare the total cost, not the daily headline price. A local Canary firm with zero excess and no deposit usually works out cheaper overall than a low airport-desk quote that adds a large excess and paid super cover. See our no-excess car hire page for the maths.
Do I actually need a car in Los Cristianos?
Not for the resort itself, which is compact and walkable. You need one to reach Teide, Masca, the north and the quieter southern beaches without relying on bus timetables. Even two or three days of hire opens up most of the island.
How far is Tenerife South Airport from Los Cristianos?
Around 15-16 km, a 15-20 minute drive north-east on the toll-free TF-1 motorway. Tenerife North (TFN) is much further at about 75 km, so always confirm which airport your flight uses.
Do hire cars include the new V-16 beacon?
They must. Since 1 January 2026 the connected V-16 emergency beacon is mandatory across Spain and rental fleets are required to supply one. Check the glovebox at handover, because driving without it carries a €200 fine.
Can I take a hire car on the ferry to La Gomera?
Only with some firms. Cicar permits it with prior authorisation, while Autoreisen and Record go forbid taking their cars off Tenerife. Always clear it before you sail; the details are in our ferry port guide.
How far is Los Cristianos from TFS?
Tenerife South airport is about 15-16 km from Los Cristianos, a drive of roughly 15-20 minutes on the TF-1 motorway in normal traffic.
Which airport should I use for Los Cristianos, TFS or TFN?
Use Tenerife South (TFS). It is the main UK arrival hub and only around 15 km away. Tenerife North (TFN) is roughly 75 km and 60-70 minutes north, so it makes for a much longer transfer.
Do I need a credit card to collect at the airport?
For international brands, yes: they hold a deposit on a credit card in the main driver's name. Local firms differ, with Autoreisen card-only and Cicar accepting debit or cash, often with no deposit. Check our no-excess car hire guide before you book.
Is there a toll on the TF-1?
No. Tenerife has no toll roads, and the TF-1 is free to use. Any aggregator claiming a 'TF-1 toll' is simply wrong.
Should I collect at the airport or have the car delivered to my hotel?
Collect at TFS if you arrive in daylight and want to drive straight away. Choose hotel delivery or in-resort collection after a late or delayed flight, when navigating the resort's one-way streets is best avoided. The ferry port guide is handy if you plan to drive on to La Gomera too. Ready to lock in your car before the peak weeks sell out? Christmas, the UK February half-term and Easter empty the fleets four to eight weeks ahead, and automatics go first, so compare cars now and secure your dates.
Can I take my Tenerife hire car on the ferry to La Gomera?
Only if your hire firm allows it. Cicar / Cabrera Medina permit it free with prior authorisation, Goldcar charges for a cross-border add-on, PlusCar needs written permission, while Autoreisen, Record go and TopCar forbid it. Breaking the rule voids your insurance, so confirm the policy in writing before you book.
How long is the ferry to La Gomera?
About 50 minutes on the fast ferry from Los Cristianos to San Sebastian de La Gomera. It is the highest-frequency western route, with roughly six to eight combined Fred Olsen and Armas sailings a day. Check the live 2026 timetable on the operator sites.
Which islands depart from Los Cristianos?
The three western islands: La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro. The eastern islands, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, sail from Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the north instead, so head to the right port for your crossing.
Do I need a car on La Gomera?
To reach Garajonay National Park and Valle Gran Rey, effectively yes. The cheapest, cleanest option is to travel as a foot passenger and hire a fresh car at San Sebastian port from around 30 euros per day. Buses are limited and organised tours follow a fixed route.
Where do I park at the ferry port?
The PARKIA Valle Menendez covered car park, about 300 m from the port, is the best value at roughly 11.80 euros per day, open 24 hours with CCTV and a 2.20 m height limit. It fills by mid-morning. The open-air port lot is dearer at around 25 to 33 euros a day.
Is La Gomera doable as a day trip?
Yes. The first morning ferry and an evening return give you about nine to ten hours on the island, enough for the forest or the coast but not comfortably both. For both Garajonay and Valle Gran Rey, an overnight stay works far better. See more trip ideas on our FAQ page. Sorting your Tenerife car first makes the whole island-hopping plan easier. Compare hire cars now and pick a firm whose ferry policy matches how you want to travel.
Which Tenerife firms have no excess and no deposit?
The local Canary operators are the ones to look for: Cicar, Autoreisen, Cabrera Medina, Sanasty and PlusCar all build zero-excess, fully comprehensive cover into the headline price, typically with no or only a low deposit. The airport international brands such as Goldcar and Record go do the opposite, blocking a large excess on your card instead.
Do I need a credit card to hire a car?
Not with most local firms. Cicar, for instance, accepts debit and even cash, so a credit card is optional. Airport brokers almost always insist on a credit card in the lead driver's name to hold the excess pre-authorisation, so if you only carry a debit card, a local firm is the safer choice.
Do I need separate excess insurance in the Canaries?
If you hire from a zero-excess local firm, no, because there is no excess for a policy to reimburse. If you book through an airport broker on a deposit-and-excess rate, a standalone annual UK policy is genuinely useful and is often cheaper than one week of the desk's super cover.
Are tyres and windscreen covered?
Often not, even on zero-excess basic cover. Tyres, glass, keys, underbody damage and misfuelling are commonly excluded across firms. Autoreisen's “Comfort Plus” add-on at around EUR 2 a day closes most of these gaps, so it is worth asking about when you book.
What is the deposit on an airport hire car?
Airport brands block the excess as a pre-authorisation rather than charging it, and that excess is often in the EUR 900-1,500 range on a small hatchback; confirm the exact figure per booking. The amount is frozen on your credit card for the whole hire, so make sure the card has enough headroom.
Can I pay with a debit card?
Yes, with most of the local Canary firms, a debit card is accepted at the desk. The exception is the airport international brands, which typically require a credit card in the lead driver's name to hold the excess. Note that Autoreisen, although local, is credit-card-only at the counter, so check each firm's terms. Ready to skip the excess and the desk upsell? Compare zero-excess Tenerife hire cars and book the all-in price up front.
Where can I go whale watching near Los Cristianos?
Trips run from Los Cristianos harbour itself and from Puerto Colón in Costa Adeje, both on the Teno-Rasca strait — Europe's first Whale Heritage Site. Look for a boat flying the yellow Barco Azul flag, which marks operators who keep 60 m clear of the animals and limit watching to 30 minutes.
How do I get to Siam Park by car and where do I park?
Take the TF-1 to exit 73; it is about 8 km and 12-15 minutes from Los Cristianos. On-site parking is around €7 per day, or use the free car park opposite at Siam Mall / Magma Arte y Congresos, about 600 m away over a pedestrian bridge. The free car park fills by roughly 10:30 in summer, so arrive early. Confirm prices on siampark.net.
Do I need a permit or pay to visit Mount Teide?
Driving into the park and riding the cable car are open to everyone — the round-trip non-resident fare is about €40-42 (confirm on volcanoteide.com). The summit trail (#10) needs a free permit from reservasparquesnacionales.es, capped at 300 people per day, and from 2026 an ecotasa of up to €25 for non-residents applies to the summit and Montaña Blanca trails.
Which beaches near Los Cristianos are safe for families?
Playa de las Vistas in Los Cristianos is the safest family choice — Blue Flag, calm, lifeguarded, with parking at the harbour and PARKIA. Black-sand beaches such as Playa de la Arena and Benijo look dramatic but have strong currents and frequent red flags, so they are not suited to swimming with young children.
Is the Teide road ever closed?
Yes. Winter ice and snow regularly close the high roads (TF-21, TF-24, TF-38), sometimes at short notice. Always check the Cabildo de Tenerife's updates before you drive up, and turn back if conditions look poor — the gradients are unforgiving in ice.
Can I drive up to Teide at night to stargaze?
You can, but the access roads are unlit, winding and very cold at altitude, often passing through the sea of clouds, and the cable car does not run at night. Stop only at designated miradors. Many visitors choose a guided astronomy tour instead to avoid night driving altogether. Ready to explore Tenerife on your own schedule?
